What is MTD Income Tax?
MTD Income Tax is short for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.
It changes how many people who file a Self Assessment tax return report their income to HMRC.
Instead of keeping records however you like and dealing with everything once a year, you’ll need to keep digital records and send quarterly updates using compatible software.
You’ll still need an end-of-year Self Assessment submission.
Does MTD Income Tax apply to freelancers?
Yes, MTD Income Tax can apply to freelancers if their qualifying income is above the relevant threshold.
Qualifying income includes income from self-employment and property.
If you freelance alongside employment, your employment income does not count towards the MTD qualifying income threshold, but your freelance income may.
Does MTD Income Tax apply to landlords?
Yes, MTD Income Tax can apply to landlords.
Property income counts towards qualifying income for MTD.
If you have both self-employed income and rental income, HMRC looks at the combined qualifying income when deciding whether MTD applies.
Does MTD Income Tax apply to consultants?
Yes, consultants can be included if they earn self-employed income and meet the qualifying income threshold. This can include independent consultants, contractors, advisers and other people who report consulting income through Self Assessment.
Do I need MTD Income Tax if I already use FreeAgent or Xero?
Using FreeAgent or Xero is a good start, but it does not automatically mean you are ready for MTD Income Tax.
Your software needs to be set up correctly, your bank feeds need to be working, and your income and costs need to be recorded in the right areas.
The software can help with the process, but it cannot judge whether every figure is correct
