Making Tax Digital
frequently asked questions

What is MTD Income Tax?

MTD Income Tax is short for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

It changes how many people who file a Self Assessment tax return report their income to HMRC.

Instead of keeping records however you like and dealing with everything once a year, you’ll need to keep digital records and send quarterly updates using compatible software.

You’ll still need an end-of-year Self Assessment submission.

Does MTD Income Tax apply to freelancers?

Yes, MTD Income Tax can apply to freelancers if their qualifying income is above the relevant threshold.

If you freelance alongside employment, your employment income does not count towards the MTD qualifying income threshold, but your freelance income may.

Does MTD Income Tax apply to landlords?

Yes, MTD Income Tax can apply to landlords. Property income counts towards qualifying income for MTD. If you have both self-employed income and rental income, HMRC looks at the combined qualifying income when deciding whether MTD applies.

Does MTD Income Tax apply to consultants?

Yes, MTD Income Tax can apply to consultants if they earn self-employed income and meet the qualifying income threshold. This can include independent consultants, contractors, advisers and other people who report consulting income through Self Assessment.

Do I need MTD Income Tax if I already use FreeAgent or Xero?

Using FreeAgent or Xero is a good start, but it does not automatically mean you are ready for MTD Income Tax.

Your software needs to be set up correctly, your bank feeds need to be working, and your income and costs need to be recorded in the right areas. The software can help with the process, but it cannot judge whether every figure is correct.

Can an accountant submit my MTD updates for me?

Yes, an accountant can help with quarterly MTD updates, depending on the level of support you choose.

With MTD Review and year-end, you keep your own records but get support before the quarterly figures go to HMRC.

With Fully Managed MTD, the bookkeeping and quarterly submissions are handled for you.

Can I submit MTD quarterly updates myself?

Yes, you may be able to submit your own quarterly updates if you are confident using compatible software and keeping your records up to date.

The MTD Essentials package is designed for people who want to manage their own quarterly updates, with set-up support, deadline reminders and year-end Self Assessment submission.

What happens if my FreeAgent or Xero records are behind?

If your records are behind, they may need to be brought up to date before accurate quarterly MTD updates can be prepared.

Extra work may be charged separately where records are incomplete, bank feeds have not been maintained, or significant corrections are needed.

Do I still need a Self Assessment tax return under MTD Income Tax?

Yes. MTD Income Tax does not remove the need for an end-of-year submission. You still need to finalise your income, make any required adjustments, and submit the year-end position to HMRC.
